12 Weeks, 12 Rows, my New Sampler Project

Glimpse of my New ProjectI shared this photo of my test block for my latest quilt idea with a few of the commenters on my Saturday post with the brown tamale sacks.

(If I didn't send you a link to the photo, you may be a no-reply blogger)

I've had this idea to combine some Allison Glass Handcrafted fat quarters that I couldn't resist when they were offered on Massdrop with the tamale sacks to make a sampler quilt from this year's Block Lotto patterns with a folk art feeling.

I questioned my decision after a friend made a pair of beautiful quilts from the same Allison Glass fabrics and expressed the opinion that they only work with one another and no other fabrics.  So, before I did anything else, I first made this test block, using my Tulip Quilt Block pattern.

Larger size Tamale bag
Your mileage may differ, but I kind of fell in love with it.

The background for this one came from the chicken tamale sacks which are printed with a bright yellow ink. These are the larger sized (one dozen tamales) variety.

I was so happy with the result, I quickly made the rest of the blocks I needed for sampler row quilt I am making.

7 Tulip Blocks for a new project

I will be blogging weekly updates over on Blocklotto.com with lots more detail, my thoughts on the project, and the design decisions I make along the way,  beginning with this post:

Of course, I'll be sharing my progress as it appears on my design wall, here, as well.  Be prepared to see lots of tamale sack blocks on my design wall.

My plan is to complete one row each week for the next 12 weeks.  Sounds easy, right?  Do you have any projects you wanted to finish by the end of the year?  What could you accomplish in 12 weeks?

I was wondering how you were going to use those tamale sacks...........that is a really neat idea and great way to reuse stuff.

I am planning to make a baby quilt before the end of the year (Christmas gift for new great niece......she will be 6 months and hopefully enjoy the quilt) and will post it soon. I have been traveling so much this Summer just got home a couple days ago.

I'd never heard of tamale sacks here in PA. I think they look great as a background to your tulips. In the next 12 weeks I need to QUILT some things rather than MAKE more things. Our quilt guild is having a longarmer speak at our meeting tomorrow, and I'm taking her workshop on deciding how pick a quilt design for your quilt. I have no lack of quilts to bring and make some decisions on.

However, I have some leftover strips from a quilt I just finished binding. I don't think I'll be able to refrain from making them into a baby quilt with a Jaybird pattern that I've had for a while. Somehow leftovers just seem to call to me to use them rather than put them away, never to be seen again!!
Have a good day. (Oh, and I need to do Block Lotto block this and every month).

What could I do in 12 weeks? Clearly not as much as you! Those tulip blocks are you pretty -and yes those fabrics really work together. I can't believe how much you accomplish.

I saw the lotto post and thought it sounded interesting to do that row quilt. I'll enjoy following along here, and I wish I had no other things I have to do. I've backed myself into a corner for a few months, though!

I love your blocks! Never heard of tamale sacks. I should look around...
And as for "this only goes with like fabrics" - pshaw! I always shy away from rules like that. They're nonsense. You proved it right here. I have some of that same randomly-spotted fabric. I love it! Gotta pull it out for something fun.
