Original plan or new idea?

I had a new idea for an old project and decided to put it on the wall to help me decide. These bear claw blocks were received in a birthday block swap a few years ago. Design Wall on October 21, 2013

The original plan was to make appliqué four of the tulip blocks. Lately, under the influence of Erin Russek's Jingle Bell blocks and started thinking about enlarging a block (or four of the blocks) from that quilt to use as alternate blocks.

Original Plan for Alternate Blocks   New Idea

You can see all of the Jingle Bell blocks on Erin's blog, One Piece at a Time HERE.  If I go this route, I'll have to decide if I'll use one pattern for all four appliqué blocks or one each of the four appliqué blocks with cardinals.

Usually when a new design opportunity presents itself for something in progress–or in this case, parked until I am ready to appliqué all those leaves–I am attracted to the new shiny idea for a while, but usually stick with the original plan.  How about you?

I'm joining the Design Wall Monday list on the Patchwork Times blog.  Check it out to see what other quilters are up to.

I don't think there's a lesser option among the ones you are considering. They all sound good. I like the idea of the four different cardinal appliques, but the tulip block looks good too. The cardinals might add a varied dimension of interest among the bear paw blocks. Again, I think it's a winner anyway you go!

I wouldn't applique... but then I don't applique. I'd quilt those designs on blank background squares... if I could quilt that well. (Lotsa ifs)

Very pretty bear claw blocks and as a special birthday swap, they certainly deserve special consideration for what goes with them. I really like the Jingle Bell blocks with them...perfect Christmas colors and all. Thanks for sharing that link.

I am visiting from Design Wall Monday and would love to have you stop by and see my Corpus Collsum Project on my Design Wall. Just click on the signature link below...hope to see you there.  Your comments are 'Sew' Welcomed!

I'm doing Erin's Jingle blocks, too! I think either of the appliqué blocks you're considering would look great with your bear claws. Would you do sashing between the blocks to set them off?

Ilove those bear claw blocks, I think the cardinal applique blocks would definately make it a Christmas quilt. I can't wait to see the finished quilt, you always amaze me.

I would do 4 of the cardinal blocks, I think that would look really pretty with the bear paw blocks, but I would put a white border around them to offset them. Or even 2 cardinal and 2 round tulip blocks with different colors would look nice. I have a hard time deciding all the time.

I would do the four cardinal blocks and use part of the tulip block for the side triangles or would that be too different. I know you'll make the right choice.

I don't know about usually, but for my most recent project, I went back to the original! I would only do four of the same if my boredom quotient were high. =)

I'd use the 4 different bird applique blocks myself. (I like birds.)

I think your new idea is perfect.
