Alien Feathers and Plans for a Friday Night Sew-In

I've marked the golden oldie string star quilt and started quilting it last night.  These marked feathers felt like alien feathers to me, they are so different from my usual–the unmarked, perfectly imperfect feather-like shapes. I have begun to wonder if anyone will see me in this quilt when I'm done.

Alien Feathers

I'm a roll with this, so my plan for tonight's Friday Night Sew-In, is to keep going ... it is also my current golden oldie UFO project, so I am joining Angie's WIPS Be Gone.  I'm joining the linky party there today, as well as Free Motion Mavericks.

Next up will the be the bright logs raffle quilt.  The quilting design will definitely not be marked.  I have pieced the back ... my cat Grace Hopper helped me measure the top for that effort.

Grace helps (again)

Whenever fabric or a quilt top is spread on my worktable, Grace will be there to help–she's a fiber-loving girl.  If the fabric or top is large enough to drop to the floor of my studio, her big brother, Johnny Be Good, will roll up in whatever touches the floor, making it difficult to move or adjust.  If I am quilting late into the night, both of them will join me on the sewing machine table and curl up on a piece of whatever I'm trying to quilt.  Both of them will no-doubt be part of my Friday Night Sew-in tonight ...

I'm sharing the photo of this quilt top to ask for your input on what color thread(s) you would use on this?  Help!

I would use white thread on the quilting, that way it will show equally on the red and the blue parts that you have marked. No matter what you choose it should be really pretty. Have fun with those quilt inspectors, sounds like they are gearing up for the big night of making sure your quilting meets their expectations!

Hello Sophie,

The string star is in such lovely colours - I'm looking forward to seeing it quilted. I hope the quilting goes well it doesn't feel alien for too long.

Thank you for linking up with Free Motion Mavericks!

Love, Muv

If I read you correctly you're looking for input on the thread for the Bright Logs quilt? I would suggest a variegated "brites" thread or yellow. I've found that yellow works really well on a quilt with rainbow colors. Looking forward to seeing what you decide to use, and how you quilt this one.

Really like the quilt Grace H.is modeling (great name!). If you read my blog you know that Yuri Gagarin is my chief assistant. My first thought is a variegated thread, but I'm interested in the yellow suggestion. Hmmm!

I'm looking forward to seeing the string star quilting. As for the bright logs, my first thought was maybe a very light yellow or cream. Variegated has a habit of being the wrong color at the wrong time, but if it's okay that the colors are all over, that might be fine, too. The quilting will stand out sometimes and disappear others. A medium gray or that color called Mother Goose, sort of a grayed green might be good because it would be visible on anything.

I find that quilting will always show up in the right lighting, even if it isn't terribly visible overall. I wonder if a reddish purple thread might work on both the blue and red of the feathers. It might blend just enough with both colors to not look odd or emphasize mistakes on either section. Or you could go with a completely contrasting but soft color in a fine thread that will sink in to the quilt (maybe a grey?).

I love your quilt inspector. I have furry assistant of the canine variety myself :)

Two gorgeous projects, Sophie. Those feathers are going to pop on that quilt. As to the other, I first thought varigated thread, but am now wondering, as Quilt Musings says, maybe a light gray will show up the quilting best. Thanks for linking to WIPs Be Gone. I look foward to seeing your quilting progress on both.
