(Tedious) Work in Progress

A few years ago, I sorted through all my stash and started storing things by color ... which made it so much easier to use (and also to see which colors I always buy and which colors I never buy). For a while, I've wanted to sort my scrap bin and I've finally made a start. Already I know this is going to be so much more usable ... but the sorting is tedious!

On the not-so-tedious front, I'm about to attach the label for the Quilt Studio charity quilts--thanks, Jeri, for getting the embroidered labels to me so quickly. I should be able to send this quilt on it's way this weekend.

Check out the pretty flannel fabrics Deb used for the backing ... and her wonderful, whimsical quilting.

Everybody seems to be sorting scraps lately. When you are done with yours, will you come to my house and help me? LOL.

I never thought to organize my scraps. They all live together in one of those big plastic zip bags that bedding comes in. I think sorting them is a good idea. What are you storing them in?

I had originally planned to sort the scraps into large plastic bags and store them with the appropriate color fabric in my stash. But I think I'm going to end up with more scraps-by-color than I imagined and will probably go looking for a set of smaller boxes. A friend has his sorted into those boxes that fit on a bookshelf and look like large volumnes ... I like those, but have no idea where to find them.

Anyone have any great scrap storage ideas? I don't know if you can tell from my photo, but, if I really like a fabric, I am likely to save even the smallest scrap of it.

Well done! Just think how easy it is going to be to use them now. A while ago I cut up my scraps into useable sizes, and sorted the remaining small scraps by color. I keep them in ziplock bags inside another box I use to store the fabrics being used in current projects and printouts of lender-ender quilts I want to make. I try to trim and sort as I go now, which keeps it more manageable, but I have a small plastic container I keep odds and ends in for when I am too lazy to do that. I also use it for those scraps that are a color I don't have much of. Since it is small, I am forced to sort eventually.

How do you plan on doing love beads as a swap block... (Don't answer that - I just remembered that they want you to piece them & I am appliqueing them to a whole cloth background - TEE HEE!)

My scraps went from a baggie to a bucket, then I got tired of them being crumpled all the time. I didn't want to use them in that state.

Now I have six of those clear plastic shoe boxes, separated by color groups. As the boxes fill up the plan is to separate them further into more and more boxes.

They stay relatively nice in the boxes and they stack up right on the shelf with my stash so I see them all the time and actually use them quite often. I try to put scraps away every so often too so that everything stays neat and tidy.

I think the reason I never use my scraps is that they are too disorganized... Thanks for the inspiration to do something about it!

I love the look of the sorted scraps. I used to have mine in one of those blanket plastic bags, like Rian, until a few weeks ago I put them in another plastic bin and stacked them with my stash bins on shelves. I now have to think about sorting them by color so they will be easier to use.
