The Moral of the Story is ...

Pineapple Tool + BlockI wanted to play with scraps yesterday afternoon, and thought to FINALLY try the pineapple tool I purchased at a quilt show a couple years ago.

I had recently seen a photo of a traditional pineapple quilt and the colors made me think, rainbow scraps challenge.

So I unwrapped the Pineapple tool and made a block.

The ruler IS terribly clever ... but you end up with a lot of bias edges including most of the edges in the finished block (everything that's blue or purple in my block).   I know that a lot of new methods do create blocks with bias edges, but personally I almost always find a way to avoid them in my quilts–it just makes it easier to put the blocks together and quilt them without stretching.

I still like the idea of a scrappy pineapple quilt in my future and I will likely make a few more blocks before completely writing off this method, but the moral of the story for me yesterday was don't wait to try the gadgets, patterns and speciality rulers ... if you find out they aren't "you" ... you can pass them onto someone else while they are still the latest hot new thing.

Your Pineapple Block is a perfect mix of January's RSC Color of the Month and it's accent color. Nice work on finally trying out that tool. Perhaps, you should stay stitch the edges so the bias won't stretch out of shape.

Beautiful fabrics in your pineapple block, but it is sad that the ruler leaves you with all those bias edges.

Too bad about the bias edges, since it's such a pretty block. Further proof that looks aren't everything, eh?
I want to do a pineapple someday, too, but only if I can counteract all that bias. Life's too short for wiffly-edged blocks...

Love, Love, Love the colors in your block. I don't remember if my pineapple had bias edges in the corners. I too usually try and eliminate those. Thanks for sharing your pretty block with Oh Scrap!

the block is really pretty in those colors. But then those colors can make anything pretty...

Excellent advice -- and I agree about the bias edges.

A wonderful Pineapple block and what a good idea to do this for RSC, it's going to be a real pleasure watching this develop.

....but it looks pretty. I did a scrappy pineapple quilt with paper piecing and still love it.

What if your strips were cut on the bias? Wouldn't the edges be straight then? You'd still have to deal with bias, of course. The block is gorgeous coloration.

Beautiful Pineapple block. Like you, I prefer not to deal with stretchy blocks.

so very true about new gadgets.
i wouldn't enjoy a bias pieced block for a full quilt either, i wonder if the pineapple block could be made using non bias strips??
love your blog!
