Do All Greens Go Together?

It's a cold gray wet weekend in Santa Fe, so I spent Saturday afternoon inside making more of the broken dishes blocks.  I only needed 4 more generically green blocks and I had quite a few green bits and pieces cut and sewn.

I decided to use the existing triangles and half-square triangle units and add aqua and teal to them. The notion of combining all those variations of "green" together reminded me of an appliqué class, taught by the late Patricia Campbell, about 10 years ago, on a cold and snowy January day in Michigan.  Along with teaching us great hand-appliqué technique, she suggested that all greens go together, and invited us to imagine what the view outside the window would be like in spring or summer, when all the different greens found in grass, leaves, stems, trees, shrubs, etc., would create a beautiful landscape.

I remembered that day and suspended disbelief as I put together my four "green" blocks. These are 8-inch blocks (finished size), each made from 16 half-square-triangle units that measure 2 1/2 inches (2 inches finished size when sewn into the block.)

And here they are mixed in with the 17 previously made blocks, which also contain a few teal fabrics, on my design wall.

What do you think?  Can all greens go together or do you have rules about which ones play nicely?

I'm linking up with Angela's Scrap Happy Sunday for the Rainbow Scraps Challenge.  Go see what others have already done with the new colors for March, Aqua and Teal. Then check everyone's  design walls on Judy's Patchwork Times for even more work in progress.

I've come to that conclusion of my own accord, via the same method...gazing at all the various greens in the landscape that seem to play well together. Your quilt is a fine example as well. The brighter greens give the eye a little fun surprise.

I like them together!

I like them all together, too!

I think they look great together. My philosophy is that any two colors go together and any 10 colors that are similar also go together. It's when you use only 3 or 4 that they never seem to match.

They look great. It's the mix of all the different colors that makes it work. Beautiful blocks.

I'm with Laurina on this one. 20 greens match much better than 4 greens. Your blocks look great together.

Your broken dishes are wonderful. The greens work together because as in the garden you have them grouped in patches of the same or nearly the same tones and hues. The eye just moves from one to the other.

I'll add my vote to the many Vs. few comments. The more you have the less they clash.

I hadn't thought about that, but I can agree with the reasoning. You pictures prove it. Seems the more greens your put in a quilt, the better they go together. Thanks for sharing.

I've heard the same thing and I believe it. Love the way color and value placement in your blocks change the way a block looks.

I don't know that all do go together since I pick and choose when making a scrappy quilt. However, that being said, I think yours do. You've got enough of each color mixed in there to give it a terrific scrappy look. Great blocks.

If you have a large variety of greens in smallish pieces then they certainly can go together. Case in point: the blocks you've posted. The clash comes when there are large expanses of one green next to large expanses of another. I like to work with many, many different fabrics so my greens (or blues or reds or whatever) generally end up playing nicely.

Looking at your beautiful blocks - yes! You have so many pretty greens and I think the more you have the nicer they play together.

Absolutely, they go together. This is an amazing and beautiful combination. I love that you can take any fabric and, in small amounts, it doesn't overwhelm or look ugly in the mix.

I love these blocks. They remind me of the ocean. When I was in Ireland I was amazed at how many different greens there were on one view. They play together nicely!

Yes, all greens play nicely but the key is the more the merrier.
